last night, we went to the LA premiere of björk's new video for the song wanderlust -and it was short entirely in 3D. personally, i am quite a fan of anything 3D - pop-up books, imax films, and the like (not to mention the awesome 80's style 3D glasses that you can tuck away into your purse and sport as a fashion accessory).

i've even seen "sea monsters of the deep" in 3D, and let me tell you... i never thought i could be so terrified by IMAGES of sea monsters. they looked incredibly real. incrediby frightening.

Going Green

As a kid, having a bike was imperative for hanging out with your friends as you played in the park and/or made the short ride down to your local Thrifty's (before it was Rite-Aid) to get a scoop of rainbow sherbet. My first bicycle was neon purple with hot pink, geometrically shaped graphics decorating its frame (what can I say - it was the early 90s). It came complete with a white, woven plastic basket attached to the front in which I could stash all of my childhood necessities (Tree Top juiceboxes, My Little Ponys, etcetera). Irita says that her first bicycle had a radio (?!) and that it was the envy of all the neighborhood children. I wasn't even aware that there was such a thing!

My, how far bicycles have come since then.

Chanel recently unveiled its own bicycle as part of its S/S '08 collection. The brand isn't the first to branch into fashion bikes (Armani did the same in his S/S '06 men's collection), but it has been getting a lot of press as of late. Perhaps it is because of the approximate $12,500 price tag..? Although the black & white bicycle is covered with Chanel's signature quilted leather and the rear wheel is flanked by two saddlebags which resemble the brand's iconic 2.55 handbag (which are generally priced around $2,000 each), I would still like to see a little more, you know? Maybe if it were, I don't know, jewel encrusted or had pedals of platinum it would make more sense to me. And in all honesty, who is really going to travel around on a bicycle that's worth as much as a small car? I mean, I guess you could use it to traverse from one end to another of your private $5 million mansion, but besides that it just seems like a blatant invitation to be stolen as you park it on the sidewalk and wait in line for your $5 Starbucks venti/nonfat/extra hot/sugar free vanilla latte.

Cynthia Rowley also designed a bicycle for her S/S '08 collection. Rowley's beach cruiser version can be acquired for a mere $650. It comes with two, brown leather, satchel bags attached above the back wheel and the buyer is given the choice of either a pink, blue, or green frame which is scattered with calico like flowers. However, where the Chanel bike oozes class and sophistication (I can imagine Karl himself cruising down the street - shades, fingerless gloves, and all), the Cynthia Rowley version seems a bit, well, shabby chic.

It's hard for me to let go.

I always find myself in this predicament. I know when it's time to move on to something better, something more worthwhile. However, even when things are falling apart at the seams, I still frantically try to save whatever has been lost because I can't just give up on something that I've invested so much time and money and memories into. I can't help it. I'm loyal. I'll stay true and try my best to make it work and make everything okay. Sometimes, it's them. They start drifting further and further away and everything falls to pieces, and with it -- my heart. Sometimes it is me; it's my fault. Sometimes my interest fades and I find myself wishing for something else which will truly just let me be who I am. Regardless, it's never the same, and whatever we had is lost. Something between us has changed and our relationship with each other is doomed to never be what it once was. You would think it would become easier to say goodbye after the same thing happens time and again, over and over, but still -- I just can't forget.

My first true love lasted for about a year and half. We met at the Buffalo Exchange on La Brea and from that moment on, we were inseparable. We went everywhere together -- to parties, to shows, we even went on a tour through Europe! My beloved was broad and white, and even after our time together was through, I knew that I was hooked and would forever compare any future indulgences to it.

Unsurprisingly, my next handbag (what'd you think I've been talking about?) which is also my current, is rather similar to the first -- big, white, and structured with a minimal amount of gold-toned hardware. Alas, after about another year and a half of constant wear and tear, it seems to be going to way of my first.

Basically, I'm in need of a new bag for my regular, everyday use. It's just that I've been having a bit of trouble trying to find one that I like and that fits my needs/preferences. I've been thinking about something Zac Posen Aurora Frame bag-esque or something reminiscent of YSL's new Majorelle bag -- in white, of course. They both appeal to my big/structured/minimal gold hardware specifications, but still, I'm unsure. Sometimes it's just so hard to commit, you know?

Rainy Days and Mondays

To state it simply enough, Southern California and its populace can not handle the rain. The moment the clouds start rolling in and the rain droplets just begin to speckle the pavement like some sort of urban Easter egg -- people start freaking out. The freeways become congested in a state of perpetual rush hour and the news channels promptly launch themselves into a "Storm Watch 200_" frenzy (please fill in the blank with the appropriate year).

So. With that said, Los Angeles has been inundated with rain for the past week. This is relatively unheard of, and I can't imagine that I'm the only one who was not adequately prepared for the torrential downpour (I'm not sure whether or not to be embarrassed to admit that I do not even own an umbrella). However, if I were to find myself properly clothed for the current conditions, I imagine I would be skipping through puddles in something like this:

while everyone else is fawning over the latest fall 2008 fashion runways, i am actually looking back upon spring 2008 couture for inspiration - because...

a) let's face it, it is the ACTUAL next season and i'm obviously not wearing fall trends in 80-degree california spring weather;
b) the artist in me is much more inspired by the conceptuality of haute-couture than boring ready-to-wear; and
c) i love vintage and therefore am probably doomed to always be looking backwards instead of forwards.

with that said, my favorite looks for spring all seem to involve pretty dresses in sweet ruffles and sheer fabrics; then strangely, the absolute opposite - strong black and white matador-inspired looks; and lastly, glittery old-vegas-style metallics.

thusly, as i am hunting for next month's wardrobe additions on ebay ("shopping victoriously", you might say), these are the things that caught my little eye...

i lovelovelove the ruffle detail at the collar. subtle and you won't look like a guy in a bad 70's prom suit.

sometimes i like to go for understated sexy - where you show skin, but in subtle places. other times i just let the girls hang out, but that's not very couture is it?

thumbs up for overall pleating! if only i could pull off the drop waisted look... but at 5'3"? that is but wishful thinking.

this is what happens when a 70's sun dress and the whole barbarella 60's space-age-thing mate and have a cute, sparkly baby.

simple, fits nicely, and has cute lil' trim. (by the way, i hold mama stone vintage to blame for bringing the word "ll" back into ebay descriptive lexicon).

sort of björky-ish. but i'm okay with that.

a little more dramatic with the accordion-pleat ruffles... which makes it a perfect party dress! just don't wear it to dive bars.

adorable ruffling at the collar and bib. this is "hey i'm a guy in the 70's and this is my prom outfit" but then it's like "well i don't care what you guys think i'll wear what i want."

so this dress is sheer, but don't the bands of alternating non-sheer, solid stripe make you feel less exposed? isn't that strange??

it's 81 degrees outside, and because of this very reason i am able to bid farewell to the coldest season of the year. normally, i would be too angry and cold to revere any aspect of the wintertime; but as the snow melts from the sierra nevadas, so does my heart.

thrift envy - "dreams of domesticity" edition

i am a terrible thrifter. you may or may not be shocked by the idea, as i sell vintage clothing for a (modest) living. but the fact is, i handpick those clothes from vintage stores, estate sales, flea markets, et al. for so high a price that i rarely ever turn much of a profit... but i digress.

the point is, southern californian thrift stores are so overpicked by vintage store buyers, antique store owners, and bargain hunters alike that it the treasured gems most people find at thrift stores are no longer in the store when i get there - probably sitting on a shelf in an overpriced boutique somewhere. that's why i love groups like nifty thrift on flickr and thriftwhore on livejournal - people from all around the world share pictures of the wonderful things that they find in thrift stores, usually for some ridiculously low price that makes me sort of sad and wish that i coud live in a place where i could find things like pucci dresses for $3 (oh, one can dream...) nevertheless, here are some things that i have fawned over from the aforementioned groups:

"This is a photo taken in the Summer of 1967 of me wearing one of my favourite Biba dresses. I still remember trying it on in Biba's communal changing room in Kensington Church Street, listening to Sergeant Pepper on the stereo. What an exciting time that was.

I particularly loved this dress because it was cut in such a way that it fitted my petite figure perfectly and the halter-neck style looked very flattering. I had never seen a dress like it before and I thought it was absolutely gorgeous!!!

I don't remember wearing this dress at any particular occasion, but I did go to a lot of parties with my friends that lovely summer and we often frequented the Café des Artistes in Chelsea and I would certainly have worn it there.

When I look at this photo now I think how lucky I was to have been 21 in the Summer of Love."

	01. vintage 1960's faux fur toggle coat with a hood looks so warm! i love the embroidered details and the hood.
	02. 1950's black and white velvet satchel purse this is sort of like what i want my luxurious velvet wallpaper to look like.
	03. 1980's gold leaf sequined sweater i am not normally a fan of 80's style but for some reason have recently been obsessed with sequins.
	04. black and silver sequin flapper drop leaf dress currently obsessed with sequins and always obsessed with leaf prints (see here). also i love the 30's inspired cut of the dress which might look questionably bad on my more than stick-shaped figure.
	05. vintage black and white tuxedo dress i love tuxedo dresses, and especially am fond of this particular one for its trompe l'oeil qualities. reminds me of the trenchcoat daryl hannah wore as elle driver in kill bill.
	06. vintage black and white ruffle tuxedo dress ANOTHER tuxedo dress? yes. i love the ruffled collar and pleating on the bodice, with the tulip cut skirt.
	07. 1980's 9 west high button boots cute cute cute 80's take on victorian boots. i would have bid on them but my feet are a cursed 1.5 sizes too small.
	08. 1980's silver and gold bow sweater well, i bought this gold bow belt off of ebay and am trying to find something to wear it with. but i am pretty sure wearing a gold bow belt with a gold bow sweater would probably be overkill, or stylish in an ironic way (see cory kennedy).
	09. 1970's blue & red plaid dress i think this dress is by gunne sax. i love the bright blue color, and am somewhat partial to plaid prints in colder months. maybe because it reminds me of flannel?
	10. 1960's cream & pink carousel dress so when i was young i used to collect these things called carousel ponies, were they were kind of like my little ponies but had giant poles sticking out through them like some kind of pony shish kebob. the more you collected, the larger your little horse carousel would be. i don't collect carousel ponies anymore but am not beneath collecting clothes with carousel ponies on them.
	11. 1960's navy fleur-de-lis skirt i am reluctant to admit that i am somewhat of a francophile, but i guess that would be difficult to hide in this skirt. but i'm ok with that.
	12. SWEET 1980's pink and gray polaroid cool cam the best part is that it still takes 600 film. only downside is you might look like an ironic hipster carrying it around. but i'm ok with that.

i have always had a fasciantion with the whole art nouveau and arts and crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a fascination with the style that was re-discovered and adopted in the whole peace and love movement of the 60's (see biba). certainly one of the most well known (and one of my favorite) artists from that period was aubrey beardsley - swirling, dramatic, romantic, dark... perfect inspiration for this gloomy january weather.

and a beautiful gustav klimt piece done in a similar style...

the following are a list of items that i forgot to or never bid on from ebay, and then shortly afterwards regretted it so much that i saved their pictures into a file on my computer which i will now show you. feel free to share your own tales of ebay pain and regret.

category 1: crazy seller sets price too high/crazy bidder raises price too high

rare chanel record purse which i think went for $800+. i know it's rare. but i can't live without it.

humongous bakelite heart necklace that had a starting price of $100.

paul frank collaboration with artist mark ryden, sold out and now only available on ebay. for $200+.

SWEET vintage mondrian boots from the 60's (the seller said his mom was a go-go dancer). they were $150 but in retrospect i should have bought them!

chuck taylor-inspired chanel sneakers. these went for $150+ i think? it's not a bad price but more than i want to spend for tennis shoes (i never wear them).

vintage polka dot dress. like 98% of mama stone's items, this went for like $100+.

authentic vintage lolita sunglasses (not the fake kind that urban outfitters sells for $18 each), went for $30. and i ended up paying $30 for heart sunglasses at topshop anyway.

category 2: does not fit/will not fit no matter how much i justify it in my mind
this category only usually applies to shoes or dresses that are so tiny that they will not fit humans. with larger dresses and things i can usually find a way to tailor them.

i think these vintage lightning bolt heels were an 8.5? i am a 7. too much of a difference for me to pad.

vintage red and white bow peep toe wedges. size 5. i think more people had small feet back then?

chanel meets cinderella! i think these were a size 9.

vintage piano-shaped music/jewelry box that would never have been able to house my massive jewelry collection.
